The first for an evening or more somber event, the second for a daytime or happier event.
That said, I like stripes and polka dots. Mixing patterns is a good idea as long as the colour families are the same, and the pattern sizes are greatly contrasted or similar in size. (Yeah, that helped narrow it down, huh?)
