Possible TMI

If girl things scare you away, then

I went out to Sunset Hills to see a new Dr today. She was impressed at how much IUD research I had done and said she had no problems giving me one! They've ordered me a Mirena and will let me know when it comes in so we can schedule insertion for my next period. I called my insurance company and it's all covered as part of the office visit copay.

5 years of no babies (and very possibly no periods) for $15. $30 if you count the copay for the consultation office visit.

Boomshaka!!

So you really don't want to have kids? I didn't realize it was a five year thing.

No, I really don't want kids. But the thing about this is that it can be removed at any time if I ever changed my mind. There's a slightly increased chance of PID (pelvic inflammatory disease) if you have an IUD and have multiple partners or partners with STDs, and PID can cause infertility. So this Dr. had said she would only insert if I didn't want kids, just because of that extra risk.

The other kind (Paragard) is for 10 years, but it doesn't decrease your period like this one does. I'm all about very light to nonexistant periods.

Sunset Hills...what doctor did you see? My old office is right off Lindbergh (near Watson) :)

[identity profile] zinniz.livejournal.com 2005-11-17 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
That's where this office was. I saw Dr. Ostapowich. There are a couple Dr's in that practice though. Very nice folks!

Never heard of that Dr....must be new.
I see Dr. Donna Wenzelberger. She's awesome. :)

I looked up your doctor...they're not in the same building. They're pretty close though!

[identity profile] tuckspuddn.livejournal.com 2005-11-18 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
That would explain why I hadn't heard of yours then! :)

[identity profile] raspberrypie.livejournal.com 2005-11-17 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i'd get one but my mom had one and it kept creating tears in her ... cervix? uterus? wherever it's placed... and it also made her periods a lot worse. i'm afraid it might be genetic, and i'll have the same issues.

[identity profile] zinniz.livejournal.com 2005-11-18 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
The paragard is notorious for making periods worse--that's why I went for Mirena since its hormones often make people's periods go away. Sorry to hear that about your mom. A perforated uterus must be horribly painful :(

[identity profile] raspberrypie.livejournal.com 2005-11-22 03:13 pm (UTC)(link)
cool, but can you not have children because of scarring, or is that just a myth?

[identity profile] zinniz.livejournal.com 2005-11-22 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a myth. The only possible thing that could cause infertility is if you get PID (pelvic inflammatory disease). The risk of PID is slightly higher with an IUD in, but really, as long as you're in a monogamous relationship, the risk of PID is essentially none. You'd have to have a partner with an std somewhere along there to cause that.

With other problems (perforation or expelling), they take the IUD out, so that's not going to cause any problems except you have to go back to another BC method.

hm, thanks.
i've been looking for another option for a while now, and maybe that's the one. my mom had the perforation issue a lot and heavy periods, so that would be a definite reason to take it out. and she had fertility issues later on, too.

Did you see recently there have been some commercials on TV for something like an IUD (I believe) that looks like a plastic ring and its blue? I cant remember what its called, but it seemed interesting. Is that what you are getting or the standard variety? Are they metal? I thought thats what they said in "health" class. (I, obviously, have NOT done homework in this subject.)

I think I would almost consider getting one, but not if there is a risk of infertility, so guess I will have to stick to the pill.

[identity profile] zinniz.livejournal.com 2005-11-18 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
The plastic ring thing sounds a lot like NuvaRing (clear not blue though) which isn't really like an IUD since it's vaginal and not in the uterus. I've used it for years and it's great.

There are two kinds of IUDs available for use in the US, Paragard and Mirena. I'm getting Mirena. They're not made of metal--they're plastic. Paragard does include copper though, since that's part of what makes it effective. Mirena doesn't have copper, just Progesterone.

Honestly, the risk of infertility is near nothing as long as you don't sleep around. Doctors (in missouri particularly) try to play things safe so they don't get sued though.

Yeah, thats it, the NuvaRing.... Im going to have to look into that.
